In 1956, Peyton Place by Grace Metalious hit the book stores. The fictional story was set in a composite of several real New Hampshire towns. Today, we have our own Peyton Place located in Orford, NH in the middle of the Upper Valley. Historically the Mann Tavern, Peyton Place Restaurant is a 40 seat country casual establishment owned and operated by Chef Jim and Heidi Peyton. Featuring European and Asian Inspired cuisine, the Peytons take special care to handcraft the menu from organic meats and seasonally grown vegetables. The menu is complemented by a carefully selected wine list and full bar. Some of my menu favorites are the Vietnamese Bouillabaisse, the Lobster Feta Salad, the Pistachio Crusted Scrod and the Apple Puff Pastry with Chef Jim’s fabulous cinnamon ice cream. Noted author and Hanover, NH resident Jodi Picoult, once stated, in an interview for a New England travel publication, that her perfect day would end by consuming the entire Peyton Place menu. For a true dining experience, travel the 3.5 miles from Breakfast on the Connecticut to Peyton Place – it is so much better than the book.
